The Braunschweiger Domsingschule is an institution sponsored by the St. Blasius Cathedral Foundation in Braunschweig .

The cathedral singing school was founded in 1976 by church music director Helmut Kruse , cathedral cantor of the Braunschweig cathedral. Today it is the largest institution for Protestant church music in Germany .

In 2008 550 children and 250 adults made music in the cathedral singing school in 23 choir groups, a brass ensemble and the semi-professional cathedral symphony orchestra .

The Domsingschule is supported by a support association whose donations in money and in kind flow into the practical work. Since 1999 it has been led by cathedral cantor Gerd-Peter Münden , who is supported by two other cantors.

Group structure

In contrast to many other music schools, the children do not have to pass an entrance examination. Children who start school in the following year start in Kinderkantorei I with a musical early childhood education program with a focus on singing. In the first year of school, the children move to Children 's Choir II . In the second class girls and boys who are young Kantorei I and Mädchenkantorei I split. With increasing age, the children eventually switch to the Kurrende . Young people from the 9th grade switch to the youth choir.

With the onset of adulthood, male and female voices switch to the Braunschweig Cathedral Choir , which is the only choir that requires an entrance examination, which is accepted by the cantor and the voice speakers. The cathedral choir currently has 140 adult members. Singers with particular vocal experience and aptitude can be found in the vocal ensemble .

A special feature of the Braunschweig Cathedral Singing School is the inclusion of instrumental ensembles such as the Cathedral Symphony Orchestra and the brass ensemble .
