The Braunschweigische Reimchronik , also called “Braunschweiger Reimchronik”, is a representation of the history of the Saxon ruling house from the end of the 13th century. For this chronicle, the author used the form of the rhyming chronicle, which was widespread in Western Europe in the Middle Ages .

author

The author of the Braunschweigische rhyme chronicle is unknown. The work was probably written by a Braunschweig cleric from the circle of the Braunschweigisch-Lüneburg dukes in the period between 1279 and 1292. An appendix goes back to 1298.

content

The story of the Saxon ruling house from Widukind to the Brunones and Heinrich the Lion to Duke Albrecht I († 1279) is told in 9,339 verses . Details of Braunschweig's city history and the Staufer-Welf throne dispute are also described.

swell

The chronicle has only survived in two manuscripts from the 13th and 15th centuries. The presumed author of the " Cronecken der Sassen " (approx. 1489 to 1491), Hermann Bote , used the Braunschweig rhyming chronicle for his historical work.
