The Breede River ( Afrikaans : Breederivier , German: broad river ) is a 337 km long river in the Western Cape Province , Republic of South Africa . Its catchment area is 12,384 km². In the Khoikhoi language it is called Synna , which can probably be translated as “contested river”.

Larger cities (from the source to the mouth) on the Breede are Worcester , Robertson , Montagu and Swellendam , it flows into the Indian Ocean west of Mossel Bay at Witsand near Cap Infanta . Major tributaries are Buffeljags River , Elands River , Groot River , Hex River , Hooks River , Holsloot River , Nuy River , Konings River , Pietersfontein River, and Sonderend River .
