The Sonderend River in Riviersonderend |
The Sonderend River ( Afrikaans Sonderend Rivier ) is an approximately 170 kilometers long South African body of water in the Western Cape Province . It flows into the Breede River .
Due to its catchment area with high rainfall rates, it is the most productive tributary of the Breede River . The source branches of the Sonderend River are in the southern regions of the Kapfaltengebirge near Franschhoek , Jonkershoek and Wemmershoek . Upstream, it feeds one of the most important drinking water reservoirs for the Cape Town metropolitan region , the Theewaterskloof reservoir. Other short rivers come from the Riversonderend Mountains and flow into the Sonderend River at Greyton and Genadendal .
Although the Sonderend River reliably has greater flow rates during the year, the older irrigation areas in its semi-arid valley were small and only two in number. It's the agricultural areas around Greyton and Stormsvley .
