The house at Breite Straße 42 is a listed building in the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is a residential and commercial building.

Architecture and history

The building is located in the historic old town of Wernigerode on Breite Straße , one of the city's main shopping streets. It is three stories. The roof was also removed. There is a dormer window with two windows facing Breite Straße. Between these there used to be an opening through which the hay could be brought to the topsoil. The street front of the building was built with functional, simple half-timbering.

A shop has been located on the lower floor of the building since the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy are the five wooden pillars on the ground floor, which are decorated with several carvings. The installation of the shops changed the symmetry of the building that had existed up to that point.

In the middle of the first floor, facing the street, is the colored, four-part civil coat of arms of the owner family of this building with a helmet attachment.

The building used to have the location list number 434. Originally it was a residential building with an annex and courtyard, stable with laundry room. In 1895/96 the house was owned by the master shoemaker Ferdinand Richter together with his wife Johanne geb. Lünig. They ran a cobbler's shop on the ground floor. Now these rooms are used as an ice cream parlor with street sales.

The house is listed in the monument register of the city of Wernigerode as a monument under registration number 094 25022.
