The house at Breite Straße 8 in Düsseldorf was built in 1890 by the architects Jacobs & Wehling as an administrative building for the Düsseldorfer Allgemeine Versicherungsgesellschaft for sea, river and land transports founded in 1845 . The building, which cost 170,000 marks to build , served both representative and business purposes.

The house has not been preserved, its property was rebuilt after the war with the former Düsseldorf headquarters of Dresdner Bank .

architecture

"The monumental street front shows impressive architectural forms in the free Italian Renaissance". Two upper floors rose above a rusticated basement , followed by a low mezzanine floor . The street facade was divided into six axes and ended with a strong cornice and a balustrade . The first floor was emphasized by the architecturally complex window frames. The parapet fields below the windows were designed with reliefs and cartouches . Above the windows there were triangular gables as window canopies that rested on consoles . Festons adorned the spaces between the windows on the mezzanine floor.

The inside of the building was designed with vaulted ceilings, stucco and marble cladding. On the ground floor were the rooms for the management and the large office, safe and cloakroom. The director's office was on the street. The single-storey office wing was located in the back of the building. The entire office space was supplied with daylight through a skylight .
