Brennburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The late Celtic Viereckschanze Brennburg is located about one kilometer south of the Fischach district of Willmatshofen in the Augsburg district in Swabia . The well-preserved earthwork is now protected by the high forest and is freely accessible.

history

The more than 300 well-known Viereckschanzen in southern Germany probably originated in the more recent La Tène period . The more recent research assumes that these are manors that were integrated into a larger settlement structure. The facilities could only be used to a very limited extent as defensive structures. The low wall heights and ditch depths, as well as the mostly unfavorable fortification location in the area speak against an interpretation as fortifications.

description

The earthwork lies on a step in the terrain of a foothill of the Schalkenberg at a height of about 527 meters. The floor plan of the Brennburg is almost square, the east side (102 meters) is slightly shorter than the west flank (112 meters). The north wall is 113 meters long, the southern rampart measures 109 meters.

The gate faced the tracks to the south. The maximum wall height (measured from the bottom of the trench) is approx. 2.5 meters. The wall is interrupted by some modern punctures.
