burn and be grateful

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

burn and be grateful is the title of a traveling exhibition by stage artist Gesche Piening , who developed and realized it together with media artist Ralph Drechsel. The exhibition “burn and be grateful” sheds light on individual aspects of the basic cultural-political and financial situation as well as the working and living conditions of independent dance and theater professionals in Germany. It is part of the art project TESTSET. TESTSET examines the “theater principle” in different formats in cross-border cultural productions and products, whereby the “theater principle” does not necessarily have to be found on the stage.

“Burn and be grateful” was opened in the summer of 2012 at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin , and has since been touring Germany as a traveling exhibition .

background

In order to document the current economic, social and labor law situation of dance and theater professionals in the independent dance and theater scene in Germany in all its complexity, the Performing Arts Fund, in cooperation with the Federal Association of Independent Theaters and the regional associations of independent theaters as well as numerous others Partners 2008–2010 developed the »Performing Arts Report« and published it at the end of 2010. Its results are the starting point and basis for the exhibition “burn and be grateful”.

Title "burn and be grateful"

The results of the »Performing Arts Report« suggest that working and living conditions in the independent theater and dance scene in Germany are extremely precarious . In the opinion of the exhibition organizers, the fact that a large number of independent dance and theater productions and production facilities still exist and are maintained shows the great enthusiasm and conviction of the actors as well as a certain tendency towards a Protestant work ethic and artistic self-discipline (Gesche Piening). This ambivalence is reflected in the title "burn and be grateful".
