Breviceps gibbosus is a species of amphibian from the genus Breviceps .

Breviceps gibbosus

The body is very stocky. The head-torso length is up to 96 millimeters. The top of the body is covered with warts, the bottom is granular. The top is brown with a wide, yellow-brown, jagged longitudinal band on the back and an indistinct, same-colored lateral stripe on both sides. The front head is short. The crack in the mouth is short. The eyes are small, their diameter is one tenth to fifteenth of the length of the head and torso. The limbs are very short. The first and second fingers are the same length. The second finger is as long or slightly longer than the fourth finger. The fifth toe is no longer than the first toe. The sub-articular cusps are clearly visible. The medial metatarsal cusp is very large, scoop-shaped, and longer than the first toe.

Occurrence

The species occurs in the sandy areas of the South African Cape Peninsula from Piketberg to Stellenbosch , another population can be found in Newlands .

Systematics

The species Breviceps gibbosus was first described by Carl von Linné as Rana gibbosa in 1758 . Blasius Merrem placed them in the genus Breviceps in 1820 .
