Three notations of the brevis

The brevis or double whole denotes a note value of normally two whole notes in notation (music) . The spelling as a transverse rectangle comes from the mensural notation , during this time the brevis could, under certain conditions, be three times as long as the next smaller note value. In addition, the spelling of a whole note framed by two vertical lines is also used today. Two whole notes lying close to each other, on the other hand, only designate the duration of a whole note, namely when (on string instruments) a tone is to be played as a double touch on two strings at the same time or when two different voices that are notated on a staff are in the Hit Prime .
