occupation

The white planet (original title: La Planète blanche ) is a Canadian-French animal film by Thierry Ragobert and Thierry Piantanida from 2006 .

action

In The White Planet is a wildlife and nature film. It deals with the animals and plants that live in the freezing cold of the northern regions. Long shots of glaciers and ice deserts, bizarre ice formations and the white pack ice in contrast to the black-blue sea allow the viewer to immerse themselves in this white world. Tundra and the north of Canada are shown with their residents. Unprecedented images of animals, such as B. the birth of some polar bear cubs and the hunting of sea lions are shown. Other animals such as elephant seals and walruses , musk ox in their struggle for social status in the herd, the seemingly endless train of caribou give an impression of life in the eternal ice. The ethno music, which picks up noises such as the puffing of the musk bark or the squeaking of the pack ice, accompanies the film. The film is commented on by a narrator in an explanatory and slightly poetic manner.

background

The duo Thierry Ragobert and Thierry Piantanida shot this film over a period of three years. In search of breathtaking images of animals and landscapes, they traveled to the North Pole , the ice desert of Greenland , the pack ice of the polar sea , the tundra of Siberia and northern Canada. This work produced over 100 hours of film material about the flora and fauna of the white part of the planet. Later the material was cut into about an hour and a half of film.

The film should point out climate change . It is seen as a document of a slowly disappearing world. The film, supported by the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany , aims to show that a whole world - the white planet - will disappear as a result of human-induced global warming.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described the film as an “atmospherically dense animal documentary with breathtaking landscapes”. The Wiesbaden Film Assessment Office gave the film the rating of “Particularly Valuable”. The reasons for the FBW report include the following: “In this sensual and intelligently composed nature film, the animals and the landscape of the Arctic are presented with large images. [...] The impressive film, carefully and artistically assembled in every detail, strikes a wide arc and shows an animal world that has been largely unknown to many viewers and needs to be discovered and preserved. "
