Brian Baloyi (born March 16, 1974 in Alexandra , Johannesburg ) is a former South African football player . The goalkeeper has won four South African championships and numerous other national titles in his career so far (as of 2009) and was part of the South African national team in five major tournaments .
Club career
Baloyi played well over 300 league games for the Kaizer Chiefs between 1992 and 2004 . In addition to two national championships (1992 and 2004), he won the African Cup Winners' Cup against Inter Luanda in 2001 , the Rothmans Cup (1997, 1998) and the Coca-Cola Cup (2001, 2003, 2004), the Bob Save Super five times Bowl (1992, 2000) and the BP Top 8 (1992, 1994, 2001). During the 2003/04 season he lost his regular seat to Rowen Fernandez and moved to the Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the season . From 2006 he was mostly only a substitute goalkeeper behind Calvin Marlin and only made 49 appearances in five years. During this time two more championship titles fell (2006, 2007) and a triumph each in the Nedbank Cup (2008) and in the SAA Supa 8 (2007).
National team
Baloyi made his debut on June 4, 1997 in a friendly against the Netherlands in the South African national team . At the end of the year he was used in the 1997 Confederations Cup in the final group game against Uruguay. A few months later he took part as a goalkeeper at the 1998 African Cup and finished second with the national team after a 2-0 defeat in the final against Egypt.
At the 1998 World Cup in France, as at the 2002 African Cup of Nations , he remained as a substitute goalkeeper behind the European regional player Hans Vonk . In 2000 he was one of two over 23-year-olds in the South African squad at the Olympic Games in Australia, but was only a substitute keeper behind Emile Baron .
As a result, Baloyi, who also wore the captain's armband several times, was less and less active; between 2004 and 2008 he was only called up three times. In May 2009, national coach Joel Santana surprisingly appointed him to the 30-man provisional squad for the 2009 Confederations Cup after he was able to oust his team-mate Marlin from the goalkeeper position at Mamelodi at the end of the season.
After retirement
Brian Baloyi has been the owner and president of Alexandra United since November 2010.
