Brian George William Manning (born May 14, 1926 in Birmingham , † November 10, 2011 ) was a British amateur astronomer and asteroid explorer.

He began his professional life as a draftsman and later moved to the University of Birmingham as a measurement technology specialist . In the late 1950s, he constructed an interference-controlled measuring device in a workshop that made it possible to measure diffraction gratings up to a size of six square inches.

Between 1989 and 1997 he discovered a total of 19 asteroids at his private Stakenbridge observatory ( IAU code 494) .

In 1988 the asteroid (3698) Manning was named after him.

In 1990 he was awarded the HE Dall Prize of the British Astronomical Association .
