Brian Valerius

Brian Valerius (* 1974 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a German law scholar and professor at the University of Bayreuth .

Life

After graduating from the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Nördlingen in 1993 and doing civilian service, Valerius began studying law at the University of Würzburg in the 1994/95 winter semester . He completed this in 1999 with the first state examination in law and, after the subsequent legal clerkship at the district court of Würzburg, also passed his second state examination in 2002. He then worked as a research assistant for Eric Hilgendorf at his Würzburg chair. Under his supervision, Valerius obtained his doctorate in 2004. iur. In 2009 he also completed his habilitation, after which the law faculty of the University of Würzburg awarded him the venia legendi for the subjects of criminal law, criminal procedure law, European and international criminal law, and commercial criminal law.

After acting as professor at the Universities of Frankfurt an der Oder , Frankfurt am Main and Cologne between 2009 and 2011, Valerius accepted a position at the University of Bayreuth in July 2011 . There he has held the Chair of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law since November 2011. In 2014, the denomination of the chair was changed to "Chair for Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and Medical Criminal Law (Criminal Law II)".

Valerius' research focuses primarily on criminal procedural law and the legal ethical and legal philosophical questions of criminal law. Other focal points are internet criminality and criminal law in an international and intercultural context. Valerius gained notoriety, among other things, through his comments in the Leipziger Commentary , the Munich Commentary on the Code of Criminal Procedure and Beck's online comments on the StGB , OWiG and StPO .
