history

People have lived on the site of the Bridge Inn since at least 1086; that's why the settlement is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Parts of the structure that still exists today date from the late 16th century, but most of the property was built from clay and stone in the 18th century; however, an extension built later in the 19th century is made of bricks. The roof is covered with slate throughout.

Inside the building there are three guest rooms, one of which is used as a house brewery . The interior includes many fittings and accessories made in the 19th century. The structure was placed on November 11, 1952 on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. The interior has been included in the National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors of the Campaign for Real Ale .

The Bridge Inn has been an inn since at least 1797; At that time, two other structures belonged to it: a quay on the River Clyst and a salt boiler . In the 19th century, wrestling competitions were held in the inn, and cattle were traded on the site until 1900.

Queen Elizabeth II visited the Bridge Inn in 1998; it was her first official visit to a pub. She was given a case of souvenir ale , which she said her husband, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh , would like. The inn has been in the same family since 1897.
