The Van Brienenoordbrug (also just Brienenoordbrug ) is an arched bridge on the Rijksweg A16 in Rotterdam . It is part of the eastern Rotterdam motorway ring . The bridge, which consists of two almost identical, side by side arched bridges with bascule bridges , crosses the Nieuwe Maas , one of the main rivers of the Rhine-Meuse delta . With more than 250,000 vehicles, the A16 on the Van Brienenoordbrug is one of the most frequented motorways in the Netherlands. Today the bridge has 12 lanes as well as a bicycle and pedestrian path. The 1320 meter long Van Brienenoordbrug is located at the Rhine kilometer 995.20 and kilometer 5.84 of the Dutch waterway 102 (Nieuwe Maas - Nieuwe Waterweg - Maasmond), which ends at kilometer 46.17 in the North Sea .

The eastern bridge was opened by Queen Juliana on February 1, 1965 . The western structure was opened to traffic on May 1, 1990. The bridge is named after the island Eiland van Brienenoord , which is partly below it . On average, 140,000 ships pass under the bridge every year. About 500 of these ships are too high to pass the bridge normally, which is why the three bascule bridges lying next to each other have to be opened. The process takes 18 minutes. Of this, opening and closing each take 4 minutes. The passage of the ship takes about ten minutes. A bridge opening must be requested at least three hours in advance from the Rijkswaterstaat traffic center.

In 2008 it was determined that the bridge was in a dilapidated condition, which is why it should be completely renovated immediately in the next ten years.
