The bridge over the Noord ( Dutch Brug over de Noord , also Alblasserdamsebrug ) crossing between the Dutch towns Alblasserdam and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht the North , such as the lower reaches of the Waal in this section of the Rhine-Meuse delta is called. Rijksweg 915 and a bicycle and pedestrian path run on the steel tied arch bridge with bascule bridge , which was opened in 1939 . The structure is located at Rhine kilometer 980.60 and kilometer 121.76 of the Dutch waterway 101 (Rhine – Waal– Boven-Merwede – Beneden-Merwede – Noord).
The main span is a tied arch bridge with a span of 184 meters. On the west side, a truss bridge with an overhead carriageway and a length of 48 meters serves as a foreland bridge. On the east side there is the bascule bridge with a length of 49 meters and several reinforced concrete bridges as approach bridges. The bridge is a total of 900 meters long.
The bridge over the Noord was opened on November 14, 1939. When the Wehrmacht attacked the Netherlands on May 10, the German troops under Lieutenant General Kurt Student initially knew nothing of the existence of the structure. After the Dutch armed forces successfully defended the bridge and the eastern north bank, the air force bombed the ramps to the bridge on the morning of May 11th. When the center of Alblasserdam was also the target of attacks with low- flying aircraft at 12.40, 12.50 and 14.14 , the Dutch armed forces withdrew. Even in 1945 the structure was not significantly damaged. To date, it has largely been preserved in its original state and is available as Rijksmonument (no. 516075) under monument protection .
The Rijksweg A15 ( Rotterdam - Nijmegen ) ran over the structure until the North Tunnel, located directly north of the bridge, was opened in 1992 . Thereafter, the section with the bridge was given the name Rijksweg N 915. In addition to regional traffic, the route mainly serves trucks with dangerous goods , for which the north tunnel of the A15 is closed.
