The Merwedebrücke Papendrecht ( Dutch Merwedebrug Papendrecht ) crosses the Beneden-Merwede , as the lower reaches of the Waal in this section of the Rhine-Meuse Delta , between the Dutch municipalities of Papendrecht and Dordrecht . The Rijksweg N3 as well as a bicycle and pedestrian path run on the steel tied arch bridge with bascule bridge , which was opened in 1967 . The structure is located at the Rhine - kilometer 973.75 and kilometer 115.04 of the Dutch waterway 101 (Rhine - Waal - Boven-Merwede - Beneden- Merwede - Noord ).
The main span is a tied arch bridge with a steel roadway that hangs from the two main beams on diagonally running steel cables with a diameter of 79.5 mm each. The span of the arch bridge is 202.80 meters. On the north side there is a bascule bridge with a length of 33.3 meters. Beam bridges with a length of 315.90 meters and 454.90 meters serve as approach bridges . The bridge is 1032 meters long in total.
In 1932, Rijksweg 3 was planned as a motorway between Amsterdam and Rotterdam via Gouda . In the Rijkswegenplan from 1968 the route was then changed towards Dordrecht. Apart from the section designated as N3, in which the Merwedebrücke is located, the plans for Rijksweg 3 were dropped in the 1970s. In addition to local traffic, the route is primarily used for trucks carrying dangerous goods , for which the Drecht tunnel on Rijksweg A16 is closed.
