The Brig o 'Doon , also Old Bridge of Doon or Tam o' Shanter's Brig , is a former road bridge in the Scottish town of Alloway in the council area of South Ayrshire . The building, which is now only used by pedestrians, was included in the Scottish monument lists in 1971 in the highest monument category A.

history

Artist 's impression of Tam o 'Shanter on the bridge

When exactly the bridge was built has not been conclusively clarified. Although it was first mentioned in writing in 1512, it is assumed that it was built in the 15th century, probably around 1460. In 1593 it is said to have been in a ruinous condition. The Brig o 'Doon was restored in 1832 and 1978.

The bridge is mentioned in the famous poem Tam o 'Shanter by the poet Robert Burns . The protagonist races towards the bridge, pursued by ghosts and witches from the Alloway Auld Kirk . This means his salvation, since he believes the creatures cannot cross them. ( Run Meg, it's Tammie's luck! Only win the narrow bridge! Blow it in their face there, you are not allowed over the water! )

description

The Brig o 'Doon is a stone arch bridge that crosses the Doon on the southern edge of Alloway with a steep arch. For its year of construction, the clear width of the segment arch is relatively large at 21.9 m. The clear height is 7.9 m. The masonry consists of quarry stone with a brick arch. Stone parapets delimit the roadway on both sides. On both sides, a wide, tapering driveway with curved parapets leads to the bridge. The Brig o 'Doon is now closed to traffic and is just a footbridge.
