Brigitte Smith (born June 26, 1938 in Stolp ) is a German artist who has illustrated numerous books for children and young people . She was best known as a draftsman for three Lurchi books .

Life

After completing school, Brigitte Smith learned the arts and crafts in Germany at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden , at the Academy for Graphic Arts in Munich and in Canada at the Academy of Fine Arts in Montreal. Smith worked for various school book publishers and advertising agencies. She spent a total of eleven years abroad, the last seven of which in San Francisco , where she had her own studio. Her artistic work was shaped by the so-called hippie years that she experienced in San Francisco. Back in Germany, she won a drawing competition in which the successor of the formative Lurchizeichner Heinz Schubel was sought. Smith works as a freelance artist in Munich, where she teaches at the Institute for Graphic Design. She gives courses for children as part of museum education and gives readings and presentations of drawing opportunities for children at primary schools, hospitals and libraries in Munich.

Smith illustrated many books for children and young people for publishers in Germany and abroad. Her work ranges from freelance work, watercolor drawings , illustrations to vivid collages and objects. She took part in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. She is married and has three children.

Lurchi

The Lurchi books 53 to 55 come from Smith. Their drawing style was very experimental and differed significantly from that of its predecessors. She campaigned for a pacifist and humanist Lurchi at Salamander , which she also reworked in her comics. Since she did not respond to Salamander's wishes to adapt her drawings and content to the tastes of the public, the contract was terminated. After her time with Salamander, Smith continued to work in the youth book sector and as a freelance artist.
