British languages
The British languages are Celtic languages and belong to the subgroup of the P-Celtic languages .
They include the following languages:
-
Welsh ( Cymraeg )
- its Patagonian dialect, the Patagonian Welsh
- Cumbrian (extinct in the Middle Ages)
- South West UK Group:
- Breton ( Brezhoneg )
- Cornish ( Kernowek ), extinct in the 18th century , now revived
Some authors assume an original dialect continuum of the British languages, from which South West British deviates more. Cornish is closer to Breton than to Welsh. The extinct Kumbrian, on the other hand, was so close to Welsh that it used to be called the dialect of Old Welsh. However, the sources for the Cumbrian are very thin, so that no clear statement can be made about this today.
