British Sugar is the only UK manufacturer of sugar made from sugar beet . The company is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods and was founded in 1936 by the Sugar Industry (Reorganization) Act . British Sugar was privatized in 1981 and taken over by Associated British Foods in 1991.
Sugar factories
Only four of the original sugar factories remain:
- Bury St Edmunds (Suffolk)
- Cantley (Norfolk) - the UK's first sugar mill
- Newark-on-Trent (Nottinghamshire)
- Wissington (Norfolk) - the largest sugar factory in Europe
The parent company AB Sugar also has sugar factories in China, Spain ( Azucarera Ebro ), Poland ( Czarnikow ) and South Africa ( Illovo Sugar ).
