Browningia hertlingiana is a species of the genus Browningia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German businessman and companion of Curt Backeberg, Mr. Hertling.

description

Browningia hertlingiana grows tree-shaped with several side shoots and reaches heights of 5 to 6 meters. A trunk up to 1 meter high is formed. The columnar, light blue-green, upright shoots have a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. There are 18 or more ribs dissolved in cusps . The areoles on it are somewhat sunk into the shoots. The thorns of the vegetative part of the shoot that arise from the areoles are yellowish gray. Your one to three central spines are strong and up to 8 inches long. There are four to six radial spines there. The flowering part of the shoot is covered with up to 30 flexible, yellowish and bristle-like thorns.

The white flowers reach up to 5 centimeters in diameter. The dry fruits have a diameter of 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Browningia hertlingiana is widespread in the Peruvian regions of Huancavelica and Ayacucho in the valley of the Río Mantaro and Río Apurímac at altitudes of 1800 to 2000 meters.

It was first described as Clistanthocereus hertlingianus in 1937 by Curt Backeberg . Franz Buxbaum placed them in the genus Browningia in 1965 . A synonym is Azureocereus hertlingianus (Backeb.) Rauh .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
