Brownsbank Cottage

The Brown Bank Cottage is a residential building near the Scottish village Elsrickle in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1987 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building was probably built as a workers' residence in the second quarter of the 19th century. It became known through the Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid , who lived in it with his wife from 1951 until his death in 1978. The Biggar Museum Trust acquired Brownsbank Cottage after her death and restored it during MacDiarmid's lifetime. It is made available to Scottish writers. Past residents include Matthew Fitt and Booker Prize nominee James Robertson .

Brownsbank Cottage is in the hamlet of Candymill off the A702 . The one-story building is three axes wide. Its masonry consists of quarry stone , with details set off with natural stone . Parts of the facades are plastered with Harl . Four-part lattice windows are installed. A winter garden emerges in the middle of the east-facing front. The kitchen, however, goes from the back. The building closes with a slate- roofed gable roof with gable-end chimneys.
