RS-232 modem Smarty 28.8 TI from Dr. Neuhaus

Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus is a Hamburg- based company that produces digitization solutions for the energy industry. It originated in the telecommunications field and manufactured the first modems with FTZ approval in the late 1980s .

founding

Gottfried Neuhaus founded the company in Hamburg in 1979 as an engineering office , initially specializing in the manufacture and sale of industrial controls.

Further development

From 1985 the company started manufacturing telecommunication terminals, among other things in cooperation with the data transmission service Temex provided by the Deutsche Bundespost . A milestone in the company's history was the Fury modem introduced in 1988 , one of the first modems for private online access, which at that time was not yet connected to the Internet; rather, connections to other computers or to mailbox networks such as e. B. the FidoNet . In 1992 the introduction of one of the first modems in the form of a plug-in card for the PC called FURY-Card followed .

With the Fury 2400 , the company succeeded in producing a pocket-sized modem for mobile use that had the functionality of a conventional modem.

The company was known throughout Germany in the 1990s when the World Wide Web moved into private households. The modems of the company Dr. Neuhaus were largely used to gain access to the new medium. The other, at that time less known areas of the Internet, such as e-mail , FTP or Usenet, could also be used.

In 1994, the company manufactured the first fax modems that used the mobile communication channels of the German D networks to transmit digital data .

With the decreasing importance of modems for online access, the company withdrew from this business area and is now practically irrelevant in the market for private users.

Current

Since 1994, the company has been part of Sagemcom , a European manufacturer of communication terminals based in Rueil-Malmaison , France. Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus produces products from the areas of smart metering , remote meter reading and M2M communication at its headquarters in Hamburg and the production site in Rostock with around 100 employees . The focus of activities is on intelligent meters ( smart meters ) and the smart meter gateway that is being certified by the BSI . The subsidiary Sagemcom Fröschl from Walderbach offers software solutions for smart meter gateway administration and meter data management (MDM) .
