His most famous film role is that of the apostle Thomas in Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth .

In 1995 he also became chairman of the charity, Families Need Fathers England. He tried very hard to improve the image of the organization, which campaigned for the rights of unmarried or divorced fathers vis-à-vis their children and sometimes showed misogynous tendencies. Lidington's commitment to raising children together after a separation was also evident in private life: although he and his wife Sheila Johnson separated in 1989 after 11 years of marriage, neither of them ever filed for divorce. Instead, they remained on friendly terms and looked after the daughter together.

In addition, Lidington was involved in local politics from 1974 as a member of the Liberals.

Bruce Lidington died of heart disease on August 5, 1996 at the age of 46.
