Brun Campbell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sanford Brun Campbell (born March 26, 1884 in Oberlin , Kansas , † November 23, 1953 in Venice , California ) was an American ragtime pianist and hairdresser.

Life

Campbell had piano lessons at an early age, allegedly also in Sedalia in 1898 with Scott Joplin , and was one of the first ragtime pianists to record records. He worked mostly in the southwest United States before opening a hair salon in Tulsa in 1908 ; from 1928 he ran a salon in Venice (California), which he ran until his death. He made a brief return to music in the 1940s, recording a few versions of the Maple Leaf Rag and other ragtimes after hearing that Scott Joplin's widow was living in poverty. He also published on early jazz.

The authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton count Campbell among the few authentic survivors of the ragtime era from before Eubie Blake , Jelly Roll Morton and Willie The Lion Smith . His recordings are considered typical examples of the Midwestern Saloon Ragtime .
