The lower Brunnenmeisterhaus

The lower Brunnenmeisterhaus in Augsburg is a craftsman's house from the 18th century, which today houses the Swabian Crafts Museum.

location

The lower Brunnenmeisterhaus is part of the historic waterworks at the Red Gate . It is located in the so-called “Handwerkerhof”, which is bordered by part of the old city wall, a wing of the Heilig-Geist-Spital and the historic water towers . The somewhat hidden location gives the ensemble a very idyllic character.

history

The lower fountain master's house served as a storage facility and workshop for the water supply systems at the Red Gate. It was built in the middle of the 18th century in the course of extensive renovation and new construction work under the direction of the Augsburg fountain master Caspar Walter . Its counterpart, the upper fountain master's house , served the fountain master as an apartment, directly adjacent to the two water towers. It is also known as the “House with the Fishes” or “House with the Fishes” (named after two bronze dolphins next to the entrance).

In 1879 the water supply of the grown city was relocated to the Hochablass , so that the historical facilities became meaningless. The factories and pumping equipment were dismantled, but the houses remained and were used in different ways. The Brunnenmeisterhaus was badly damaged during the Second World War , but after 1945 it was still used for handicrafts at times. In the following decades, however, the building increasingly fell into disrepair.

At the beginning of the 80s, the Chamber of Crafts for Swabia had the entire ensemble renovated according to the historical model and under monument preservation requirements. The renovation was carried out using old manual work techniques, which was not least due to practical reasons: construction vehicles and cranes were unable to reach the craftsmen's yard with its narrow entrance.

On June 29, 1985, the Swabian Crafts Museum was opened in the lower Brunnenmeisterhaus for the 2000th anniversary of Augsburg.
