The Swabian Crafts Museum in Augsburg is a museum operated by the Chamber of Crafts for Swabia , in which workshops of old craft trades are exhibited in faithfully reproduced detail.

history

The museum is located in the lower Brunnenmeisterhaus , which dates from the 18th century and is part of the historical ensemble around the Red Gate , the Heilig-Geist-Spital , the waterworks at the Red Gate and the water towers . The building, which was badly damaged by decay and war damage, was renovated by the Chamber of Crafts in the early 1980s based on the historical model. The museum opened in 1985.

The permanent exhibition of the artisan museum shows historical workshops of old and mostly extinct crafts such as bathers , saddlers , shoemakers , watchmakers , bakers , bookbinders and trimmers . You can see original equipment, tools, work materials, etc.

A separate part of the museum is dedicated to the guilds . Among other things, guild coats of arms , guild stones or guild chests can be seen here. The exhibits in the museum were brought together from all over Swabia .

The museum itself has an exhibition area of ​​250 square meters and occasionally uses the neighboring box tower for special exhibitions . The number of visitors has leveled off at around 25,000 annually.
