The comprehensive school founded in 1948 with upper secondary school level "Bruno H. Bürgel" (short: Bürgelschule) is located in the city of Rathenow (district: Rathenow-Ost) in the Havelland district . It is a recognized UNESCO project school. The Bürgelschule, which was honored as the sportiest school in Brandenburg in the school year 2010/11, is also a partner school of the soccer club Hertha BSC (since 2007) and the basketball club Alba Berlin (since 2011).

history

The Bürgel School in Rathenow was named after the writer and science journalist Bruno H. Bürgel . As a hobby astronomer and scientist, Bruno H. Bürgel gave lectures for students and was also a guest in Rathenow. Due to the connection between the city and the optical trade and the development of telescopes for astronomical research, the Bürgel School and its works are very closely connected. The Bruno H. Bürgel School Rathenow was founded in his honor and for his merits in the science and use of optical devices in research. In 1948 the school was founded in Goethestrasse 86, which is surrounded by rubble. The move to Jahnstrasse 33 took place as early as 1952, partly because the premises in Goethestrasse were insufficient. In 1960 the Bruno-H.-Bürgel School was merged with the then Friedrich-Engels-School. At that time, 41 teachers in 33 classes were teaching around 1,000 students. Only four years later (1964) the schools were separated again and lessons then took place with 20 classes each. The last move took place in 1972. Since then, the school has been housed in a new building (prefabricated "Erfurter Modell") in the Rathenow-Ost urban area. This location was partially modernized in 2000 (school yard and interior rooms) and in the following years adapted in sections to the needs of a comprehensive school or a modern school environment. After reunification in 1990, the Bruno H. Bürgel School continued to exist as a comprehensive school. In the course of the educational reform, lessons from the 7th grade onwards were expanded to include a gymnasium upper level ( grades 11–13). The support association "Bruno H. Bürgel eV" started its work in April 1992 with around 180 members. In the years that followed, the school restructured itself under a sports profile and focused its school work on promoting talented children in sports and at the same time securing the school career of these talents. In addition, the school was named a UNESCO project school in 1995 and continues to participate in a wide range of projects to this day. Since the 2002/03 school year the Bürgelschule has been an all-day school in a fully bound form. To this day, the school work is dedicated to the sporting promotion of its students (extended physical education in upper secondary level as advanced course, training camp and involvement in state and federal competitions) and cultural projects within the framework of the UNESCO initiative (Senegal project 1995, project “Europe's grip on the Sternen “1999 in South America and other intercultural projects).

Buildings and environment (architecture)

The Bruno H. Bürgel School is a prefabricated building of the "Erfurt" type and corresponds to a model form for school buildings in the GDR . The school is thus a three-wing, light-flooded prefabricated building. The classrooms have the standard dimensions of seven by seven meters and can be reached quickly thanks to the H-shaped structure. Like many other schools of this type, parts of the Bruno H. Bürgel School were also renovated. Above all, diverse outdoor facilities were added (small soccer field, playground, beach volleyball field, school café and open-air theater).

Priorities and school life

The Bürgelschule offers a variety of working groups. The focus is on sports and fitness. The working groups are to a large extent offered and supervised by partners of the school. These include the golf club organized by the golf resort in Semlin am See , the bowling club supervised by the national coach Peter Lorenz and the referee group, which has been organized for several years by Klaus-Dieter Stenzel (member of the referee committee of the Brandenburg State Football Association ) .

UNESCO project school

The Bruno H. Bürgel School has been a UNESCO project school since 1995 and part of an international network of schools with the same goals. The Bruno H. Bürgel Comprehensive School supports UNESCO's commitment with projects. For example, a youth meeting center was set up in Senegal , there were large-scale donation projects for the tsunami victims in 2004, and there is still a Chernobyl aid project to this day . In addition, famous personalities associated with the Bürgelschule, such as Jérôme Boateng , have been involved in the “Living a Dream” children’s football project in Brazil at or with the Bürgelschule. Other completed and ongoing projects are the tree planting project 2013, the participation in the ROTE HAND project (project against the use of child soldiers - terre des hommes ), schoolchildren go on a research trip with Arved Fuchs and schoolchildren help refugees ( Armenia - asylum seekers, children and compulsory schooling)

School successes

Maintaining traditions is an important part of everyday school life at the Bürgelschule. These established traditions and events are intended to preserve and strengthen the school community as part of the school concept. The so-called "Heinrich-Paul-Projekttag" is dedicated to the former and long-time caretaker of the school and includes a cleaning campaign for the school. The KK 3000 running movement is dedicated to a former schoolboy who died of cancer. Henceforth, this running event has been kept as an important tradition for the entire school for cancer research . Likewise, the green bracelet symbolically worn by many students strengthens the community and at the same time stands against discrimination and for tolerance at school (“Not me, not you, but us”).
