Bruno Belhoste

Bruno Belhoste (born June 14, 1952 ) is a French historian of science. He is Professor of the History of Science at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Director of the Institut d'histoire moderne et contemporaine (IHMC).

Belhoste studied in Paris with a degree in history in 1975. He was then a high school teacher in Tripoli (1976 to 1978) in Libya and from 1978 to 1986 at the Lycée polyvalent in Chelles . He received his doctorate in 1982 (Thèse de troisième cycle) and qualified as a professor in 2001. From 1986 to 2003 he was researcher at the Institut National de Recherche Pédagogique and from 1998 to 2002 lecturer at the École nationale des ponts et chaussées . From 2003 to 2007 he was Professor of the History of Science at the University of Paris X in Nanterre and from 2007 Professor at the University of Paris Panthéon Sorbonne. From 2014 he was at the IHMC.

From 2008 to 2013 he headed the research project Modernités et Révolutions de l'Université at the Sorbonne . From 1996 to 2006 he was a regular visiting scientist at the Dibner Institute of MIT and from 2009 to 2014 at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. In 2015 he was visiting scholar at the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences at the Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

Belhoste is best known for his biography of Augustin-Louis Cauchy . He is particularly concerned with the history of mathematics in the 18th and 19th centuries in France, the history of institutions and the educational system. He wrote the story of the École Polytechnique from its foundation to the 19th century, which also played a central role in the history of mathematics and in the training of the French administrative elite.

He is a member of the French National Committee for the History of Science.
