Amy Dahan (2016)

Amy Dahan-Dalmédico , Amy Dahan, one is French math - and science historian .

Dahan studied mathematics at the Sorbonne until 1979 and received his doctorate in the history of science in 1990 with a thesis on Augustin-Louis Cauchy ( Thèse de doctorat d'état ). She taught at the University of Amiens until 1983, at the École polytechnique from 1988 to 2002 and from 1998 at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). In 2008 she taught at the Free University of Brussels . From 1995 she was research director of the CNRS for a program on mathematical practices in the 20th century and the interaction of mathematics with culture, technology and other sciences and was co-director of the Center Alexandre Koyré of CNRS and EHESS.

She dealt with the history of mathematical physics and applied mathematics (especially education in France at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries in the school of the École Polytechnique), history of algebra (group concept), women in mathematics and various mathematicians ( Sophie Germain , Fourier , Laplace , Lagrange , Galois , Augustin-Louis Cauchy , especially his contributions to physics and his role in the creation of the group concept as well as the general environment, Jacques-Louis Lions ), history of mathematics teaching, history of science in World War II and the Cold War and the relationship between politics and mathematics in the 20th century. In addition, she deals with complex systems and chaos theory and especially climate change, on which she has led an interdisciplinary research group since 2002. She looks at aspects of the sociology of science, such as the question of how it is determined that someone is considered an expert by the public, and she deals with the mechanisms of international climate summits.

Her research focuses generally on the 19th and 20th centuries. She wrote a history of mathematics with Jeanne Peiffer , which was also translated into German and English.
