Christian Houzel

Christian Houzel (born May 21, 1937 ) is a French mathematician.

Houzel studied mathematics at the École normal supérieure (ENS) in Paris from 1956 to 1960, graduating ( Agrégation ) in 1959. From 1961 to 1963 he was Agrégé preparator at the ENS and 1963 to 1966 Attaché de Recherche at the Center national de la recherche scientifique ( CNRS). In 1972 he received his doctorate ( Doctorat d'état ) from the University of Grenoble . From 1966 to 1973 he was a lecturer ( Maître de Conférences ) at the University of Nice and from 1973 to 1991 professor at the University of Paris-Nord . At the same time he was Maître de Conférences at the École polytechnique from 1973 to 1981 . From 1991 to 1999 he was professor at the Institut universitaire de formation des maîtres (IUFM) in Paris and from 1991 to 1994 its deputy director ( Directeur adjointe ). From 1999 to 2004 he was head of the research group Archives de la création mathématique at the CNRS . He has been retired since 2004 .

From 1982 to 1983 he was President of the Société Mathématique de France (SMF) and from 1984 to 1988 of the Comité National Français des Mathématiciens (CNFM). 1983 to 1986 he was on the governing body of the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie .

In 1983 he was one of the founders and until 1991 deputy head of the Recherches Epistémologiques et Historiques sur les Sciences Exactes et les Institutions Scientifiques (REHSEIS) group at the CNRS. He is co-editor of the Revue d'histoire des mathématiques .

In 1996 he received the Prix ​​Binoux of the Académie des Sciences and in 2001 the Koyré Medal . He is a corresponding member of the Académie Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences .

In 1999 he was co-editor of the new edition of the works of Pierre de Fermat (originally by Paul Tannery ) with Gilles Christol , Roshdi Rashed (Blanchard, Paris).

His doctoral students include Christine Proust and Karine Chemla .

He is married and has three children.
