Jean-Paul Pier (born July 5, 1933 in Luxembourg ; † December 14, 2016 in Bettembourg ) was a Luxembourg mathematician who dealt with analysis, the history of mathematics and mathematics education.

Pier was a professor at the Center Universitaire de Luxembourg for a long time. As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Oregon and he was temporarily at the Center Nucléaire in Grenoble.

Pier was visiting professor at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1994/95.

He dealt mainly with harmonic analysis and the history of mathematics, especially analysis in the 20th century. He is the editor of two anthologies, which are standard works on the history of mathematics in the 20th century.

He was also active internationally in various scientific committees, for example for NATO, and was active in persuading UNESCO to declare 2000 the Year of Mathematics (the proposal came from the Luxembourg Commission for UNESCO on his initiative).
