Roshdi Rashed

Roshdi Hifni Rashed (born April 5, 1936 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian-French science and mathematics historian. He is particularly concerned with medieval Islamic mathematics .

Rashed is Professor Emeritus at Paris VII University and Research Director of the CNRS . Until 2001 he was director of the Center d´Histoire des Sciences et Philosophies Arabes et Médiévales in Paris and was founder in 1984 and until 1993 director of the scientific history research group REHSEIS (Recherches en Épistémologie et Histoire des Sciences et des Institutions Scientifiques) of the CNRS.

From 1994 to 1997 he was a professor at the University of Tokyo, where he also holds an honorary professorship. In 1984 he received a Doctor d´Etat from the University of Paris. In 1986 and 1993 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

In 1977 he received the CNRS bronze medal, the CNRS medal in 2001, the UNESCO Avicenna gold medal in 1999 and the Koyré medal of the Academie Internationale d´Histoire des Sciences in 1991 . In 2007 he received the König Faisal Prize (for Islamic Studies), in 1999 the Prize and Medal of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science, and in 2017 the Kenneth O. May Prize . He is a member of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique and the Tunisian Academy Bayt al-Hikma . In 1989 he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

Together with Christian Houzel and Gilles Christol , he is also the editor and commentator of a new edition of the number theory work by Pierre de Fermat based on Paul Tannery 's edition (Paris: Blanchard 1999).
