Umberto Bottazzini (* 1947 in Viadana ) is an Italian mathematician. He is Professor of Mathematical History and Fundamentals of Mathematics at the University of Milan .

Bottazzini dealt among other things with the development of analysis in the 19th century, especially Bernhard Riemann , Augustin-Louis Cauchy (whose Cours d'Analyse he re-edited with commentary, published in Bologna 1990) and Karl Weierstrass .

Bottazzini has been a corresponding member of the International Academy for the History of Sciences since 1993. In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Beijing ( “Algebraic truths” vs. “geometric fantasies”: Weierstrass' response to Riemann ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
