from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brunschwig am Berge , Brunschwig in der Gasse , Brunschwig Rittergut and Guts Bezirk Brunschwig were places in the immediate vicinity of the city of Cottbus , which were incorporated in 1872 and 1904 respectively. The Sorbian name of Brunschwig was Brunšwig .

location

Brunschwig in der Gasse was behind the city wall, where the city hall stands today.

history

The first mentions of the settlements are from 1486. In 1818 there were 770 residents in 155 houses in Brunschwig am Berge and Brunschwig in Gasse. The two villages used to be mainly Sorbian-speaking, but this number declined from the 19th century. Arnošt Muka counted 330 inhabitants for his statistics on the Sorbian population in Lusatia in 1884, 100 of whom were Sorbs .

After the incorporation in 1872, several elegant buildings were built on Berliner Strasse and Berliner Platz, including the Hotel Zum Weisse Ross since 1886 . On the opposite side of the street there was the Stumpe-Nagel-Haus , which had been a butcher's shop for many years.

In 1970 the buildings were demolished for the construction of the new town hall and the Lausitz hotel. Today the "Haus Brunschwig" reminds of the original name of this area.
