Breeding and setting time
The breeding and setting time denotes the time in which animals breed or give birth to young.
The term in the hunt
The term breeding season refers to breeding : birds keep the laid eggs warm until the young hatch. The setting time referred to in the hunter language the time in the ground game gets boy.

In Section 22 of the Federal Hunting Act it says: "During the setting and breeding seasons, the parent animals necessary for rearing, including those of game without a closed season, may not be hunted until the young animals become independent."
Dog ownership
During the breeding and setting season, dogs are subject to special supervision on and around all green areas. Meadows, fields and forests in and out of town are also affected. The corresponding regulations apply from April 1st to July 15th. In Lower Saxony and Bremen (there even from March 15) there is a general leash requirement for dogs in the open countryside. In other federal states only individual municipalities provide for this general obligation. A violation can be punished with a fine of up to 5000 euros.
The measures during the breeding and setting time were introduced with the reason to protect ground breeders and young animals from free-roaming dogs, especially those that chase after the animals. They don't apply to cats. Of animal rights activists , the regulations of the states of Bremen and Lower Saxony are criticized as too general, since no provision is made in the specific case actually a nuisance wildlife present. According to Wolfgang Apel , the provisions contradict the animal welfare obligation of dog owners to move their animals in a species-appropriate manner.
Exceptions apply to lawful hunting , rescue operations, the state police , the federal police and customs .
Saarland
With the amendment of the Saarland Hunting Act on April 1, 2014, in order to disquiet game and disrupt hunting, only dogs that reliably stay in the area of the path may be led off the leash from March 1 to June 30. Reliable means that the dog must be controllable and the dog owner also exercises this control. The ban on deliberately disturbing the hunt has also been added. Both regulations are subject to fines .
