Bryshere Yazshawn "Yazz" Gray (born November 28, 1993 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor and rapper . He became known for his role as Hakeem Lyon in the television series Empire .
Life
Gray took an interest in music at the age of 16 after injuring himself while playing a football game on his high school team. In order to support his single mother financially, he performed as a street artist . This is how his manager Charlie Mack became aware of him.
Since 2013, Gray has been appearing more and more at festivals in the Philadelphia area, such as the Made in America Festival or the Picnic Festival . He was then booked as an opening act for various rappers such as 2 Chainz or Fabolous .
Since 2015 Gray embodies the role of Hakeem Lyon in the Fox - TV series Empire alongside co-stars such as Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson .
In March 2015, it was announced that he had signed a recording deal with Columbia Records .
