Life

Chen, whose father played the violin, began taking piano lessons from European teachers who lived in Java from the age of four. At the age of seventeen he took a composition course at the Wesco School of Music , where Teddy Wilson was one of the teachers. At this age he played in a band with his older brothers Jopie and Teddy; he also began to give piano lessons himself. A few years later he formed a group with guitarist Jack Lesmana, with whom he made his first recordings in 1959. These were presented at Voice of America , which made him internationally known. The Down Beat , for example, honored him as " Art Tatum of the East". Together with Lesmana, Maryono, Kiboud Maulana, Benny Mustafa and his brother Jopie Chen, he was one of the Indonesian All Stars , which first appeared at the New York World's Fair in 1964/65 and together with Tony Scott , with whom they had already played in Indonesia performed at the Berlin Jazz Days in 1967. The resulting album Djanger Bali , which is partly based on themes from gamelan music , is an early example of world jazz . He also played with Jeremy Montero. In 1992, Chen performed with the Indonesian All Stars at the North Sea Jazz Festival . Most recently, Chen interpreted the standards of the Great American Songbook primarily in an easy-listening style.
