The Buchanan Point is a headland on the northeast end of Laurie Iceland in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is 4 km northwest of Cape Dundas and 1.5 km southeast of Mackintosh Cove .

The Scottish polar explorer William Speirs Bruce named a 5 km north-west cape in 1903 as part of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902–1904) as Cape Buchanan after the Scottish chemist John Young Buchanan (1844–1925), participant of the Challenger Expedition (1872– 1876). However, this cape has been named Cape Valavielle since 1838 , named by the French polar explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville . For reasons of continuity, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee transferred the name given by Bruce in 1954 in an adapted form to the headland described here.
