The book leafminer ( Phyllonorycter maestingella ) is a very common species in the family of moths (Gracillariidae).
The larvae of this moth live as leaf miners mainly in the leaves of beeches . They form characteristic feeding patterns between two ribs of the leaf, which is rolled inward by a string of threads. A dark collection of feces forms in the middle of the mine . Pupation takes place in a silk spun and the pupa represents the wintering stage of the animals.
