About half of the bay is on the Kefalos peninsula ( Χερσόνησος Κεφάλου ), which is dominated by the 429  m high mountain Latra (also Lathra or Λάτρα ) in the extreme south and the mountain Zini ( 362  m ). The southwestern end of the bay is from the Cape Limnionas taken (Akra Limnionas) and the northeastern end can with a small cape near the church of Agios Nikitas (near the forest of Plaka ), before Lakkos Beach, be located , which geographical points of the end of the bay cannot be clearly determined. The bay of Kochylari and the Gulf of Kefalos form the outline so characteristic of the island of Kos with the constriction ("neck"), which separates the peninsula of Kefalos from the rest of the island of Kos. Opposite Kochylari Bay is Kalymnos Island.

Between Cape Limnionas and Lakkos Beach there are two well-known beaches, Limnionas Beach to the west and Kochylari Beach (Κοχυλάρι παραλία) to the east. In contrast to other beaches on Kos, these two beaches are still quite undeveloped and not overcrowded.

Kochylari Beach

The beach of Kochylari is cut off from the other beaches of Kefalos and, due to the large waves and air currents, is well suited for windsurfing and kite surfing , rather than swimming. The beach is about 5 kilometers from Kefalos.

Limnionas Beach

Part of the port of Limnionas

Limnionas beach is located in a small bay with a harbor about 5 kilometers north of Kefalos and is easily accessible. Due to its sheltered location, this beach is quieter than Kochylari Beach.
