The mountain Dikeos (also: Díkeos or Dikaios , Greek Όρος Δίκαιος , short: Δίκαιος ) is at 846  m the highest mountain on the Greek island of Kos and the geologically and optically dominating mountain range of the same name, Dikeos .

Surname

The origin of the name Dikeos or Dikaios has not yet been clarified. In ancient times the mountain was also known as Oromedōn ( Ὠρομέδων ), Oriōn ( Ὠρίων ) or Dikaion ( Δίκαιον ).

location

The mountain peak is about ten kilometers as the crow flies from the capital Kos , about 1.3 kilometers from the mountain village of Zia and about five kilometers as the crow flies from Pyli .

The abandoned mountain village with Palio Pyli castle is about two kilometers to the northwest. To the east, about 3.5 kilometers from the Dikeos mountain peak , is the Kefala mountain peak with a height of 662  m

To the south, a little below the Dikeos summit, a brook rises from two sources and flows into the sea near Piso Therma .

Dikeos mountain range

In the running of approximately east-west mountain range Dikeos the mountain is Dikeos about in the western final third. There are signs of settlement in the Middle Ages on the way to the summit.

Ascent

The easiest ascent is from the mountain village of Zia (around 300  m ) and takes around 1½ to 2 hours if you walk comfortably. The path is partially signposted (in Greek and Latin script ). In the lower area there are always blue arrows for orientation, in the upper area of the hiking trail there are red arrows, points and crosses on the rocks.

Sure-footedness, good footwear and a head for heights are required. Due to the wind ( updraft ) hitting the island and the steep mountain range on the southern flank , the air can cool down considerably and rapid cloud formation is possible. In midsummer, the ascent should be done early in the morning.

building

Just below the summit is a chapel ( Dikeos Christos , also: Metamórfosi tou Christoú ). Below this chapel a room carved into the rock. A little north there is a refuge.
