history
Buffalo Gap was founded in 1877 and became a railroad junction of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad in 1885 . The city takes its name from a gap in the west between two hills, which once protected many herds of buffalo. Buffalo Gap used to be one of the largest cities in South Dakota, but the city suffered the same fate as all other cities in that era. A lantern that was accidentally knocked over by a cow started a fire in this city. The city could never recover from this event. It was also never rebuilt to its original size. Even so, there are still many historical buildings standing.
