The bow wave of Bremerhaven is a fountain sculpture in Bremerhaven , which was designed by Norbert Marten and Christel Mandos-Feldmann , executed by Norbert Marten and inaugurated by Bremerhaven's Lord Mayor Jörg Schulz in May 2002.

description

The fountain sculpture Bowwelle von Bremerhaven , placed in the middle of the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße , is a bronze ship's bow with a female figurehead and two laterally offset bow wave pieces over which water flows. Its rear side gives an insight into a ship's hull with reduced modeled ropes and boat materials. The bow and figure are reminiscent of a landmark of Bremerhaven in the harbor of the German Maritime Museum , the historic Bark Seute Deern .

The female figurehead welcomes visitors to the pedestrian zone. It leans towards visitors from a height of 5 meters with an open gesture so that the hand can be reached by passers-by. If the viewer moves around the figure, the age expression on the face changes. The shape of a young woman's face seems to change into an old one and vice versa.

In front of the fountain there is a sloping barrel, i.e. a floating sea mark , which was cast in bronze based on the key barrel from 1664.

The bow waves, the actual fountain elements, are flooded with water from the underground fountain chamber in a frost-free time and, like the figurehead, ship's bow and barrel, are illuminated with spotlights. The dry bow waves can still be interpreted as water and thus give the imaginary ship water under the keel.

The bronzes were sand-cast by the Harms art foundry in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) .

concept

The bow wave of Bremerhaven is conceptually linked to urban, historical, economic and social conditions in Bremerhaven:

  • It indicates the cultural "travel direction" at the entrance of the 2002 renovated pedestrian zone "Bürger" on Theodor-Heuss-Platz, and thus brings you to Bremerhaven's cultural zone, the Bremerhaven City Theater and the Bremerhaven Art Museum , the German Maritime Museum and the Mayor -Smidt Memorial in connection.
  • It transports the popularity of the historic Seute Deern boat into the city center, where it reflects the economic dynamism of shipping and shipbuilding.
  • Social diversity determines the inner-city image of Bremerhaven. Everyone is welcome in the city center. The figurehead of the bow wave of Bremerhaven welcomes all visitors with this in mind.

The fountain sculpture with a maritime theme should represent Bremerhaven's various demands as a maritime location: connection and commitment, dynamism, openness, direction and security.
