The genus bulldog bats ( Eumops ) belongs to the family of the same name bulldog bats (Molossidae). It is only distributed from southern North America to Tierra del Fuego. The first species to be described by Shaw in 1800 was Eumops auripendulus . Most recently, Eumops chimaera was published by Gregorin et al. first described. The genus Eumops was not recognized as a genus of its own until 1906. Like most genera of bulldog bats, the genus Eumops is still relatively unknown. The name Eumops is composed of the Greek "Eu" (good) and the Malay "mops" (bat).

description

The species of the genus reach a head-trunk length of 40 to 130 mm and a weight of 30 to 70 g. The upper side of the animals is brownish, gray or black in color, the underside is a little lighter.

The large ears are rounded or square and usually connected at the base over the head. Some species have a throat pouch. If present, it is better developed in the males than in the females.

Spread and endangerment

As mentioned above, the genus Eumops is distributed from the southern USA to Tierra del Fuego. Eumops glaucinus has the largest range.

With the exception of the endangered species Eumops floridanus (Critically Endangered) and Eumops maurus (insufficient data, endangered in 1996), the species of the genus are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN .
