Bullerjahn (student union)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bullerjahn was a student tradition in Göttingen , which was named after the Göttingen musician Rudolf Bullerjahn . The Bullerjahn took place every week from 1900 to the early 1970s in the Göttingen Ratskeller. The event was known far beyond Göttingen and was a major tourist attraction.

history

It is no longer possible to determine exactly when the Bullerjahn was celebrated for the first time. It owes its origins to the competition between the city orchestra under the direction of Rudolf Bullerjahn and the band of the 82nd Infantry Regiment under the direction of the "beautiful Meyer" in the years 1886–1890.

Course of the Bullerjahn

The Bullerjahn took place every Tuesday and Friday, in its final phase only on Fridays, in the Göttingen Ratskeller. The tables were full and each fraternity had its own place. Around midnight, the first people present called for the Bullerjahn. The backlash was always “Much too early!”. Only after some time did the band, which until then had entertained the guests with pre-war hits, condescended to sing the Bullerjahnlied. The text of this song is extremely simple: “Mr. Director Bullerjahn, Bullerjahn is here! Director Bullerjahn, Bullerjahn, Director Bullerjahn is here! - Isn't that beautiful Meyer, yes, isn't that beautiful Meyer! ”. This was followed by various songs such as the Lower Saxony song , Märkische Heide and others. But it also happened that songs were played for the individual connections. The event was usually over around one o'clock.

At the end of the 1960s the Ratskeller was rebuilt; so the Bullerjahn was lost. Although it took place in other restaurants for some time, it no longer achieved the popularity it used to and was finally discontinued. Various attempts to revive the event failed.

In the anniversary season of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of its 140th anniversary, an enjoyable evening with poems and stories from Göttingen student life as well as student songs took place in the Ratskeller on April 22nd, 2002 under the title " Mr. Bullerjahn " , in which, in addition to a GSO wind quintet, a vocal ensemble from the Göttingen student association StMV Blue Singers in Göttingen participated in the SV . Even if this event has taken place repeatedly since then and is intended to commemorate the Bullerjahn, it is not identical to the original Bullerjahn. In 2010 the Bullerjahn took place in the Deutsches Theater, as the Göttingen Ratskeller was renovated until November 4th. A CD of the (new) "Bullerjahn" was also released in 2004.

gastronomy

After renovation, modernization and reopening in autumn 2010, the bar in the Göttingen Ratskeller is operated by its tenants under the name "Bullerjahn". In November 2013 there was another event called Bullerjahn, which aims to revive the old tradition. Around 250 Göttingen fraternity students took part in the event in the old Ratskeller.
