The founders' motivation was to create a federal organization that can act freely and independently of the influence of the Contergan manufacturer Grünenthal GmbH in the interests of those affected.

tasks and activities

As part of its self-help activities, the BCG supports and advises those affected by it on all educational, psychological, medical, age-related, care-related, social and professional problems. Another goal is the comprehensive and ongoing documentation of the Contergan scandal .

The association is the only nationwide representation of interests for thalidomide victims in the Federal Republic of Germany, which is still committed today to the fact that the cause of the thalidomide scandal, the company Grünenthal GmbH, compensates for all damage suffered by the victims.

Actions and media coverage

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the market launch of Contergan, the association organized a vigil in front of the Grünenthal GmbH company in Stolberg ( Aachen region , North Rhine-Westphalia) in 2007 . The drug Contergan and other preparations with the active ingredient thalidomide were brought onto the market by Grünenthal GmbH on October 1, 1957.

For the first time in the entire history of the Contergan scandal in Germany, the BCG called for a boycott of the products of the Wirtz family in Stolberg as part of this vigil , which, in addition to Grünenthal GmbH, also owns Dalli-Werke and Mäurer & Wirtz .

Vigil and boycott have found wide coverage in the media and in addition to the then carried out in November 2007 broadcast of thalidomide film A single tablet the public again made on the background of the thalidomide scandal and the fate of the victims carefully.

Cooperation with other associations

On January 6, 2008, the association founded the International Contergan Thalidomid Alliance (ICTA) with other thalidomide associations in Germany as well as associations from Canada, Great Britain, Spain and Sweden .

On March 3, 2008, the association resigned from the International Contergan Thalidomide Alliance (ICTA) because it was only later found that the ICTA wanted to address its claims for damages mainly to the Federal Republic of Germany and only a fraction to Grünenthal GmbH.
