history

The history of the family business goes back to Michael Mäurer and his stepson Andreas August Wirtz, who founded a soap factory in Stolberg in 1845 . First, only soft soaps , curd soaps and soaps Walk for the textile industry and fine soaps in a grocery store sold for the local market. Over time, the products also established themselves in the Rhineland and later also in neighboring countries (especially Benelux and France). The production of washing powder began in 1884 and the first trademarks were registered around the turn of the century . The widow of Andreas August Wirtz, Apollonia Wirtz, acquired a larger area "in Grünenthal" (a former copper yard ) from the city of Stolberg on December 22, 1888 . With a new factory outside the city center, the company initiated the change from a craft business to an industrial company in 1889. Thanks to the newly acquired space, larger boilers and lye boilers could now also be purchased in order to increase production. In 1901 the newly developed steam heating replaced the boilers of the time. Due to the expansion of the company, the premises became too narrow after a while. For this reason, buildings with a direct rail connection were built at a new location in 1913, which further promoted large-scale mass production. From 1945 onwards, initiated by the managing director Jakob Chauvistré , considerations about the production of pharmaceutical preparations took place, which were followed up in the Dalli-Werke laboratory and led to the establishment of the pharmaceutical company Chemie Grünenthal in August 1946 . In 1990 the family company Mäurer & Wirtz was given a new structure and Mäurer & Wirtz GmbH & Co. KG. originated.

Mäurer & Wirtz now mainly produces scented waters and cosmetics in addition to laundry and soap items. Since 1992 (introduction of Betty Barclay ) it is also manufactured under license. In 2007 the company finally took over the brands 4711 , Tosca , Sir Irisch Moos and Extase from Procter & Gamble, and in 2011 the fragrance series Baldessarini and Windsor were added.

Mäurer & Wirtz owns the own brands 4711 , Tabac Original , Tosca , Sir Irisch Moos and Nonchalance, for each of which a range of perfumes and other care products is offered. It also produces products for third-party brands such as s.Oliver , Otto Kern , Betty Barclay and Baldessarini.
